What?

We are creating a VR prototype for Criminology students that immerses them in the perspective of an outgroup individual, Kane, who experiences a biased, life-threatening encounter with police. Based on Social Identity and Labeling Theories, this simulation aims to confront future law enforcement personnel with the realities of bias in high-stress situations.

Why?

Implicit biases in policing can harm marginalized groups, and traditional training doesn’t address unconscious biases. Our VR experience promotes empathy and self-reflection, encouraging officers to examine their biases.

So What?

This research could improve policing by helping officers recognize and mitigate biases, fostering fairer interactions. With further testing, the prototype could be integrated into police training, promoting justice in law enforcement.
